Alan Munshower was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and lived there until moving to Baltimore to study music at Goucher College. At a young age, Alan studied piano and voice before following in his father's footsteps and pursuing drums at the age of 10. Alan studied percussion under Alan Lyons, Bill Erikson, and David Burgess, while playing in symphonic bands and orchestras through his high school years. He continued his drumset studies at Goucher College in Baltimore with Wes Crawford and John Locke of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He was a recipient of the Rosenberg Music Scholarship during his junior year and graduated from Goucher in May of 2002, with a major in Music, with concentrations in Arts Administration and Jazz Studies.

Performance has been the eternal teacher in Alan's studies. Throughout high school Alan performed with various ensembles including the 1998 All New England Chorus (as a tenor), Glastonbury High School select full orchestra (including a Washington DC tour), Glastonbury High School Jazz Band, and Opus One. While at Goucher he performed most notably in Soft Shoe Shuffle, a jazz-fusion band that recorded a CD and toured in France during the summer of 2000. The month-long tour was part of an internship through the Office of International Studies and the Music Department. Alan also played with the Goucher College Jazz Ensemble during his four years there and occasionally with local jazz combos. He has continued to sing, and recently has been in the Goucher Chorus and a cappella group Red Hot Blue.

At the age of 13, Alan took up the acoustic guitar and now plays occasionally with his eclectic duo group of eight years, 'id', as well as solo. A self-taught guitarist, Alan has developed his own unique technical approach, melding acoustic fingerpicking and slap styles.

Since graduating from Goucher, Alan has played with the likes of Jeff Chapell, Daryl Davis, Raul Soot, and Chris Conley of Saves the Day. Alan formed Sangita, a world-jazz fusion group, in November of 2002 and toured in France with them this past summer. The tour was very successful and the band will most likely be returning next summer. In addition to performing with the Baltimore Brass, Alan is currently playing in a number of acts including the Alan Munshower Jazz Trio/Quartet and Tom Composto and the Dixieland Saints. His songwriting is featured along with his voice and guitar in his solo act, as well as with id. For more information about Alan and his various projects, visit his website at alanmunshower.com.
